Is anybody listening?

Does anybody care?

In 7th grade I had the chance to tell my teacher what was going on at home, and I almost did. I had a chance to get away from it, but I was too scared to do anything, to make the right move. My Humanities teacher Mr. W was also our drama teacher and wanted to put on a play called Is Anybody Listening? Does Anybody Care? He encouraged us to write our own pieces on issues we were dealing with. Kids wrote about drugs, peer pressure, sex, and divorce. I was so tired of fighting everything that I was feeling, so tired of covering up and feeling worthless that before I knew it I had written a piece about what was going on at home.

Jaime, is this true? Is this going on at home? Is this happening to you?

To me? Nah Mr. W, it's not me. I just wrote it.

Whether you like it or not, we care. A lot. I remember middle school being a really tough time for you, but you handled it with grace and maturity that I rarely see in kids that age. I'm sure Mr. W cared as well and he would have listened to whatever you had to say. I remember you speaking very highly of him.

Just keep your head up, we've got your back.

Kamala,

I wrote in my blog about this very issue. It is entitled "The Cipher" and it is a true story of an experience I had with a child in Kindergarten.

Thanks for your post. It brought up something from my own past, which I just blogged about. I'm not saying my experience is related or has anything to do with what you were relating. It's just that is what it made me think of. It's something I don't like thinking about. It's something I would rather forget. But I thank you nonetheless for allowing me to remember.
